I wish that 'Games in the Backyard' was not based on a true story - but it is. I wish that people didn't have to seek attention in dark places - but they do. And I wish that theatre didn't illuminate some of the darker parts of life, but it does - and it often does so very effectively. Theatre is a unique medium. Through theatre, people are educated, enlightened and entertained by being part of an experience that is gone forever in one hour. Theatre is, by nature, a fresh and live experience, and it is the transcience of theatre which I personally find extremely exciting. When I first read 'Games in the Backyard,' I knew it was a play that incorporated all the qualities of theatre that I so admire. It is a play that is thought-provoking but never preachy. It is artistic, yet never artsy. I hope that the urgency of the story and the characters will provoke you to think about, to question and to challenge some of the preconceptions that you may have had before entering the theatre.
