Arthur is sick and tired of his family's oppressively liberal ways. He's tired of the equality, the feminism, the avant-garde drama, the sexual freedom, he wants order!!! In this Polish comedy, a twenty-five year old Arthur attempts to overthrow his family's world, and all of their liberal ridiculousness. How will he do it? Will he be successful? Will he succeed in brainwashing his family, or will they succeed in brainwashing him? TANGO is a absurdly comedic, yet deadly serious, look at how ideologies can run and sometimes ruin our lives.
TANGO is considered a classic in Polish literature and was written in 1962. It has been adapted, but very little has changed - liberals will always be liberals, and conservatives will always be conservative. One is always wrong.
The whole TANGO team are students or alum of the University of Michigan and are all very active in the theater community here. The set design is by BFA candidate Rebecca Zemans, whose art is regularly shown at the Work Art Gallery . The director, Brian Lobel, has directed five shows for Basement Arts at the University of Michigan and is presenting his solo performance piece, BALL, at the end of November. TANGO was chosen by Brian because of its absurd, but completely accurate look at how people's ideology, or supposed ideology, can be justification for doing terrible things. This is happening in our world, as we speak.
