"you are all so disgustingly tolerant." - Arthur
TANGO
by Slowemir Mrozek
adapted and directed by Brian Lobel
presented at Basement Arts, Ann Arbor Nov. 15th-17th, 2003
Arthur is sick and tired of his family's oppressively liberal ways. He's tired of the equality, the feminism, the avant-garde drama, the sexual freedom, he wants order!!! In this Polish comedy, a twenty-five year old Arthur attempts to overthrow his family's world, and all of their liberal ridiculousness. How will he do it? Will he be successful? Will he succeed in brainwashing his family, or will they succeed in brainwashing him? TANGO is an absurdly comedic, yet deadly serious, look at how ideologies can run and sometimes ruin our lives.

Life, like the final tango in the play, is often inexplicable, indecipherable and weird. It is also unexpected, mysterious and amazing – depending on how we see it. Trying to find a concrete meaning to everything in life is an arduous, and often fruitless, venture – wars happens, people die, and life seems to just keep moving on without hesitation. If we try to find an overall meaning – we may end up empty-handed. And if we don't – we may never know why we are here. Are meanings found in rebellion, tradition, or somewhere beyond the spectrum? It is this exciting debate that fuels Tango from it's core, but don't look for a solution – Mrozek does not even come close to providing an answer. Just sit back, watch and enjoy.
